MUSIC VOCABULARY

Music Word Match

Vocabulary matching is most useful when students connect the terms to something they can hear or perform. Use the printable match as practice, then ask for an example.

TRY IT WITH YOUR CLASS

One clear focus.

Write the letter of the matching music word beside each definition.

Sample words for grades 4–5: tempo, dynamics, melody, harmony, timbre, rhythm. The maker lets you replace the words and definitions.

A simple way to teach it

  1. Choose the grade band and review the word list. Replace any term your class has not encountered.
  2. Read or demonstrate a meaning before students work independently. Keep similar concepts, such as beat and rhythm, clearly separated.
  3. Print the teacher answer key on its own page. Check the matches together and demonstrate one term again.

Take it a little further

Invite pairs to explain one word without naming it. Their classmates identify the term and describe how they knew.

Adapt before printing.

Open the starter, choose the grade band, then check the reading level and answer space for your class. Each printed page is US Letter. Choose 100% print scale and turn off browser headers and footers.
